A fresh breeze brings out the water sports enthusiasts
In a fresh southerly breeze, dozens of kite surfers demonstrated their skills off Weymouth Beach yesterday (6th November 2020). While a little challenging for we armchair sportspeople, the fine conditions yesterday enabled the more active among us to partake in excellent lockdown exercise.
The sport has been popular for some time locally, with a number of clubs and training academies (Weymouth and Portland Kite Surfing Club, Yumping.UK, Paracademyextreme.co.uk and Kiteaddicts, among others). For us spectators, it provides plenty of entertainment, especially during lockdown. We spotted some surfers soaring many yards into the sky. (But were not very successful capturing these moments in our video – sorry!)
Anyone who has ever “crunched” along the Esplanade in early Spring will realise there is plenty of marine life in the Bay. Gulls and crows/rooks regularly leave captured shellfish on the pavement. Lacking the powerful beaks of larger gulls, crows have developed a method to break into these tough little meals. They can be seen dropping shelled creatures from a height before leaving tens of thousands of “shelly” corpses for people to walk upon.
